LEO THIAM
University: University of Cincinnati Major: International Relations As a previous RefugeeConnect intern, Leo worked in Mt. Airy school in the summer of 2019. He focused on mentoring, teaching, and engaging in academic activities. Within those three categories he focused on team bonding and community building, self-inspiration, agriculture, mathematics, English composition, and physical education.
The impact of his work was teaching, understanding, and sharing his story while helping the younger students build their story. Leo is now a 3rd year student and is currently working on getting his bachelor's degree. Thank you, Leo! |
Amber Francesconi
University: Northern Kentucky University Major: Social Work Amber is a past intern with RefugeeConnect. She was here during the Spring term of 2019. At Mt.Airy Elementary School, there is a garden for the community that Amber helped create and make sustainable. She also helped facilitate after school clubs with the Academy of World Languages and with Mt. Airy. She left a huge impact on the community and students!
She is now getting her MSW at NKU in the advanced standing, one year program. During her educational journey with NKU now she is interning with Mebs Counseling. Thank you Amber! |
KENNEDY KYLANDER
University: Northern Kentucky University Major: Social Work Kennedy is a past intern of RefugeeConnect from the Fall term of 2018. She did work with local high schools in ESL classes. She also created accessible after school programming at local elementary schools.
One of the big impacts on Kennedy was getting to understand the students and building strong relationships with them. After graduation she was employed as a program coordinator in the social work field. She is now working for herself in her own company, KylanderContent, a digital marketing agency! In her company she focuses on SEO copywriting, social media management, and giving non-profits the tools they need to do sustainable in-house marketing. She says, “I am so grateful for my time at RefugeeConnect. I learned so much about the marketing side of nonprofit operations and about the need for self-sustained marketing. It ultimately is what inspired me to start my business!” Thank you, Kennedy! |
Dani Miller
University: Northern Kentucky University Major: Social Work Dani interned with RefugeeConnect in the spring semester of 2018. One of the impacts this internship had on her was learning a lot about the macro level of social work. She left some great impacts on the community, as well: creating mentoring opportunities with the teen girls and participating in the after school programs at local elementary schools. One of her biggest accomplishments was creating the soccer program at a diverse elementary school that still runs today!
After her internship she graduated with her Bachelor's of Social Work, and focusing on her social work career, worked as a case manager for persons living with HIV/AIDS. She is now working at a domestic violence shelter, interning with the court and working toward her Master's of Social Work. Thank you, Dani! |
Pratima Sapkota
University: University of Cincinnati Major: Finance Pratima interned with RefugeeConnect in the summer of 2019. She worked in a local elementary school and made incredible connections with the students. She says,"My focus was helping the kids feel more welcomed into their new school environment and since the kids spoke my language, I thought we made a good connection."
Pratima is now a 3rd year student a University of Cincinnati and getting her degree in Finance. Thank you, Pratima! |
