​WHO IS A REFUGEE?  


A PERSON WHO HAS BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR COUNTRY TO ESCAPE WAR OR PERSECUTION DUE TO RACE, RELIGION, NATIONALITY, POLITICAL OPTION, OR MEMBERSHIP OF A PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUP

PATH OF A REFUGEE


  1. Flee their country
  2. Registers with the U.N. High commissioner for refugees (UNHCR)
  3. Goes through application and interview process
  4. Evaluated for eligibility
  5. Referred to US admissions program
  6. Aid services subcontracted out to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), e.g. Catholic Charities of Southwest Ohio or Kentucky Refugee Ministries
  7. Matched to national voluntary registry
  8. Receives up to 90 days of legally mandated services, e.g. Housing and employment assistance
  9. Applies for green card after 1 year
  10. Eligible to apply for citizenship after five years
